Welcome!

Thanks for stopping in. My name is Dr. Kristy Wittman Howell. I can generally be found working on community-engaged scholarship, in the archives looking for new insights into community college history, running along any number of paths or sidewalks, or chatting about adoptee equity on Twitter while enjoying far too much coffee.
I have a handful of research and teaching passions: community college history, community-engaged scholarship, research, and pedagogy, research communication (across many disciplines) and getting students engaged in the places they live, work, play, and worship to make a better global community for us all.
I’ve been fortunate enough to work with some remarkable folks in the work I do. At UNCG, I regularly present and coordinate workshops with my colleagues Drs. Emily Janke and Erica Wrencher. At Johnson County Community College, I teach with Drs. Anne Dotter and Amanda Glass. And in 2024, I was (and still am) gobsmacked to have been nominated by my colleagues in chemistry for the Lieberman Award for Adjunct Excellence at Johnson County Community College, which I won. Also at JCCC, in 2022, I was recognized by my colleagues for my dissertation research and asked to serve as a college scholar, presenting on the history of community colleges founded in White-flight suburbs, and had the chance to share that work in events on campus and in the community.
I’m always happy to talk about research, running, knitting, food, or supporting students’ (and others’) education for more engaged, equitable, and sustainable communities. Don’t hesitate to reach out via email or to follow me on social media.
